Coastal Cleanup Day's Impact in California

As president of Los Angeles, California's Justice Energy, Bryan Kranitz draws upon seven years of service in the energy sector in making buildings more energy efficient through a variety of measures. A passionate environmentalist, Bryan Kranitz regularly volunteers with Heal the Bay (HTB), which is a proud supporter of Coastal Cleanup Day.

HTB organizes the cleanup of more than 60 beach, inland, river, and water locations in Los Angeles County as part of Coastal Cleanup Day, which is the world's most prominent volunteer environmental protection day. Individuals and groups in more than 150 countries participate and plan cleanup efforts to remove trash from beaches and other coastal areas that could potentially harm marine life. Cigarette butts and plastic are among the most prevalent polluters. According to the California Coastal Commission (CCC), debris has been found in 245 marine species.

The 2018 Coastal Cleanup Day was held on September 15 and organized in partnership between HTB and CCC. The three-hour event drew more than 1,000 volunteers at the Santa Monica Pier alone. Volunteers at last year's event collected more than 800,000 pounds of trash along California's inland and coastal waterways.
